Rapunzel's (Bread) Braid

*makes 1 bread loaf

Bread Ingredients:

1 tube refrigerated pizza crust dough

1 egg
1 teaspoon water

Filling Ingredients:

1 cup canned lemon pie filling

2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 (8 oz) brick cream cheese, softened to room temperature

Preheat oven to 375º.

Place softened cream cheese into large mixing bowl. Add powdered sugar. Mix on medium-high until creamy. Add lemon pie filling. Mix again until well combined. Set mixture aside.

Pop open pizza crust tube and place dough on a piece of parchment paper (on your counter). Carefully roll it out. Using your hands, press rectangle of dough out until it measures 10x12".

Turn the parchment paper (with dough) longways. Using a pizza cutter (or sharp knife), cut the dough into three long (even) strips.

Spoon the lemon/cream cheese mixture onto each strip and spread it out until it comes to 1/2" of the edges. 

Crack the egg into a small bowl. Add the water. Whisk until well combined. Dip a pastry brush into the bowl and brush the egg mixture along the right sides of each dough strip. Brush some along the top and bottom edges as well.

Carefully fold up the left sides of the dough to within 1/4" of the right. Then, fold the right sides over the left, pressing to seal. The egg wash acts like a glue and will help with this step. Do this all the way down until you have three long tubes of dough (instead of strips). Now carefully flip the tubes over so that the seam sides are down. Seal the top and bottom edges of the tubes to prevent the filling from oozing out.

Starting at one end, begin braiding the three tubes of dough, placing the left strip over the middle, then the right strip over the middle, repeating this pattern until you reach the opposite end.

Tuck the ends under and press to secure.

Lift the parchment paper (with the dough) from your counter and set it on a baking/cookie sheet.

Now, take the remaining egg mixture and generously brush it over the surface of the braided loaf with your pastry brush. Press the ends again to secure.

Place into a preheated oven and bake at 375º for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Remove from oven and let cool completely.

When cool, place the dough onto a serving platter.

Decorate with candy flowers.

Cut Rapunzel's braid with (kitchen) scissors and serve!
