Maleficent Cupcakes
*makes 12

1 dozen pre-baked cupcakes (dark chocolate or devil's food)
1 (12 ounce) bag semi-sweet (or dark chocolate) chips
1/2 cup butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup all-vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 cups powdered sugar
4-6 tablespoons milk
purple and green food coloring (I used gel food coloring to achieve these bold colors)
colored sprinkles

black, purple or green cupcake liners
1 gallon-size Ziploc bag
wax paper
2 cake decorating bags (or gallon-size Ziploc bags)

Bake cupcakes according to package (or recipe) directions. Let cool completely, preferably overnight.

Pour chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl and heat on low in 1-minute increments, stirring well after each, until completely melted (or melt in a saucepan over low heat).

Line a cookie sheet or cutting board with wax paper.

Pour melted chocolate into one of the Ziploc bags. Cut off the tip of one corner. Twist the excess bag to form a decorating bag (watch the video above to see how this is done).

Squeeze the chocolate onto the wax paper into the shape of Maleficent's horns. You'll need 2 for each cupcake. When finished, place the entire sheet into your freezer to harden.

Now, let's make the buttercream frosting. Place the softened butter and shortening into a large mixing bowl. Add the vanilla. Mix well until creamy. Add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. After all 6 cups have been added the frosting will be thick and crumbly. Pour in the milk and mix well until the frosting is light and whipped.

Divide frosting and spoon into 2 bowls. Add the green food coloring to one bowl and the purple to the other. Mix them well with spatulas. Now spoon them into your 2 cake decorating or Ziploc bags.

Take one cupcake and set it on a plate. Squeeze the purple frosting around the top edge to make a border. When the ends meet, continue swirling to fill in the center.

Now take the green frosting bag. Place it 1/4" edge of purple and begin swirling around while building up the center to form a peak.

Take the chocolate horns from the freezer and place one on each side of the green frosting, pushing them down in the cake to secure. Now sprinkle the top with your colored sprinkles. That's it! Now it's time to take a bite!!

Maleficent approves of the design!
