Monte Cristo Sandwich
1 3/4 cups + 2 tablespoons water
1 whole egg
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
In a large bowl, whisk water and egg. Add in flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk until you have a smooth batter. Set aside.
1 loaf of braided Challah Bread (I found it at Central Market)
8 slices deli ham
8 slices deli turkey
8 slices Swiss cheese
raspberry or blackberry preserves
Cut 8 slices of Challah Bread (1/2-inch thick). Layer 2 slices of ham on top of one slice of bread. Top with two slices of turkey and two slices of cheese. Place second slice of bread on top. Assemble other 3 sandwiches. With a serrated knife, slice down the center of the sandwich. Do this for the remaining sandwiches. You should now have 8 halves.
Pour oil into a deep pan and heat until 365(F) degrees. If the oil is smoking, it is too hot.
Dip the sandwich half into the batter, coating all sides, and then place into the hot oil. Let cook for 3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Do this for all sandwiches.
Taking your knife, cut each fried sandwich in half again. You should now have 16 little sandwiches. Place 4 of these on each plate. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with a side of raspberry or blackberry preserves for dipping.
