The World's Best Hot Chocolate
*serves 2-4

Ingredients:

1 cup whole (or 2%) milk
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 1/2 cups cocoa powder
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons dark chocolate, grated
1 1/2 teaspoons milk chocolate, grated
1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
whipped cream
ground cinnamon (optional)

Directions:

Pour milk and heavy cream into a saucepan. Heat over medium-high heat. Do not allow to boil or scald.

In a large bowl, mix: cocoa, sugar and both chocolates. Whisk together. Add this dry mix to the milk/cream mixture in saucepan. Whisk to combine. Reduce heat to medium.

Pour in sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. Stir well. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and ladle into serving mugs. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkling of ground cinnamon. Serve hot with a side of Disneyland's Churros.

  1. I'm lactose intolerant, could I use almond soy milk and have it come out?

  2. Made this Christmas morning (using 2%, not whole) and, even though I filled the mugs 1/3 with milk upon seeing the resulting thickness, only my hardcore chocoholic husband was able to stand to drink it-- it was far too rich and chocolatey for my daughter and I (and we love Italian hot chocolate, which you can stand a spoon in). Needless to say, we had a lot left, and I didn't want to just pitch it. Seeing that the consistency turned to that of mud when it began to cool, I scooped it into a container and warmed it up later to put on vanilla ice cream-- this recipe DOES make a really fantastic hot fudge sauce! I'll keep it in my recipe box to use as just that, but unfortunately it's a no-go for drinking for us.

  3. 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder? We followed this recipe word for word and this was the absolute worst hot cocoa i've ever had. Are you sure it's 1 1/2 cups cocoa??

  4. There is no way this recipe can be correct - this much cocoa powder and that small amount of liquid results in a thick chocolate sludge that is not drinkable. I think the amount of cocoa powder has to be WAY off.
