Goofy's Candy Company: Pretzel Rod Treats Recipe

If you've ever been to Goofy's Candy Company in Dowtown Disney then I'm sure you know all about their Build-Your-Own Treats. It's the candy counter where you can select one of several treats like: pretzel rods, marshmallows, cookies, candy apples or even a Mickey Rice Krispies Treat and then have it customized by a Disney Cast Member. They will dip it in your choice of milk or white chocolate, then roll it in your favorite crushed candy bar, sprinkles or nuts then drizzle layer upon layer of even more chocolate until you have an absolutely over-the-top, crazy delicious, customized treat.

Well, now I'm going to show you how you can create these sweets at home in your own kitchen. Yes, you can make these at home and eat them now! No waiting until your next trip to Disney!! Yay!!!!!!!!

Pretzel Rods
*makes about 25 treats

1 bag of pretzel rods (8-inches long)
1 bag of Wilton Cocoa Candy Melts or 1 brick of Chocolate Almond Bark Coating
1 bag of Wilton White Candy Melts or 1 brick of Vanilla Almond Bark Coating
Assorted toppings like: crushed Oreos, crushed Butterfinger Bars, crushed Skor or Heath Bars, crushed graham crackers, crushed Reese's Pieces, Mini M&Ms, multi-colored sprinkles, etc.
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or shortening
wax paper

Tip: Crush the cookies or candy bars in your food processor or place them in a gallon-size freezer bag and crush using a rolling pin or back of a frying pan. Store them in separate bags until ready to use.

Place the Candy Melts or Almond Bark into microwave-safe bowls (you will need 2, one bowl for each flavor). Add 1 tablespoon of oil to each bowl. Melt them in the microwave at 50% power in 30-second increments until completely melted, stirring occasionally (or melt in a double boiler).

While waiting for the candy to melt, prepare your toppings station. Pour each topping into a separate dish or paper plate (make sure you have plenty of the topping, you will need to have enough to completely cover the pretzels).

After the chocolate has melted completely, dip your pretzel rod in it and using the back of a spoon, spread it 3/4 of the way up the pretzel. Shake off any excess, then place the pretzel into the topping and using your hands, bury it. Also, pack it down a little on top, then leave it alone for at least 3 minutes. You can start working on the other pretzels while waiting.

Now go back and check the pretzel rod. Remove it from the topping and set it on a wax paper-lined plate. Take a fork and dip it in your choice of milk or white chocolate and drizzle over the treat, using a quick back and forth motion. Keep drizzling, Disney is NOT stingy with their drizzle!!

When done, let it set out until hardened. Then pretend you are back in Disney World and enjoy!!

Gift Ideas: You can buy pretzel treat bags at your local craft store or Walmart's craft section. Give individually-wrapped treats to your child's classmates or the co-workers at your office. You can also create a gift basket and fill with a dozen assorted pretzel treats. Yum!

Christmas Ideas: Buy the red and green Wilton Candy Melts to dip them in the holiday colors and/or use Christmas-colored sprinkles to roll them in. Either way, these are going to be a HUGE hit at any holiday party or event.

Party Ideas: If you are hosting a birthday or slumber party, set up the toppings station and let each child help custom-make their treat.
